PrEP in Tampa

HIV Prevention That Works — Close to Home

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a highly effective medication strategy for HIV-negative individuals who are at risk of exposure. When taken as prescribed, daily oral PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by up to 99% — and injectable PrEP offers the same protection without a daily pill.

At Midway Specialty Care Center in Tampa, our infectious disease specialists have deep experience with both oral and injectable PrEP options. We handle the initial evaluation, prescription, and all required follow-up lab monitoring — so your protection stays current and effective.

Whether you're starting PrEP for the first time, switching options, or looking to transfer your care to a specialist, we're here to help.

What PrEP Care at Midway Includes

Comprehensive PrEP care — from your first evaluation through long-term monitoring.

Eval

PrEP Evaluation & Prescription

Your provider will review your health history, assess your risk factors, and confirm you're HIV-negative before prescribing PrEP. We'll discuss both daily oral options (Truvada and Descovy) and long-acting injectable PrEP (Apretude) so you can choose the approach that fits your life.

Oral

Daily Oral PrEP (Truvada / Descovy)

Truvada and Descovy are FDA-approved once-daily pills that provide up to 99% protection against HIV when taken consistently. Your provider will help you choose between them based on your kidney function, bone health, and specific risk profile. Refills and medication assistance are handled through our 340B program.

Inj

Long-Acting Injectable PrEP (Apretude)

Apretude (cabotegravir injection) is a long-acting PrEP option administered in-office every two months — no daily pills needed. For patients who struggle with daily adherence or prefer a more discreet option, injectable PrEP offers the same high level of HIV protection on a schedule that works better for them.

Labs

Required Lab Monitoring

PrEP requires regular lab work to ensure it remains safe and effective. We monitor for HIV status, kidney function, STIs, and hepatitis B every three months — catching any issues early and keeping your prescription current. Our team coordinates all required testing and reviews results with you at each visit.

Rx

Medication Assistance & 340B Access

PrEP medications can be costly without the right coverage. As a federally qualified 340B nonprofit clinic, we can significantly reduce medication costs for eligible patients. Our team also assists with insurance navigation and manufacturer patient assistance programs — ensuring cost is never a reason to go without protection.

Who Should Consider PrEP

PrEP is for anyone who is HIV-negative and at risk of exposure — regardless of identity or relationship status.

LGBTQ+ Individuals

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men represent the majority of PrEP users. We provide affirming, knowledgeable care in a welcoming environment where you can discuss your needs openly and without judgment.

Partners of HIV-Positive Individuals

If your partner is HIV-positive — even if they are undetectable on treatment — PrEP adds an additional layer of protection. We work with both partners and provide coordinated care when needed.

Anyone with Multiple or Unknown-Status Partners

If you have sexual partners whose HIV status is unknown or who may be at risk, PrEP significantly reduces your risk of acquiring HIV — regardless of your gender or sexual orientation.

Transferring or Restarting PrEP

Already on PrEP and looking for a new provider? Taking a break and ready to restart? We make it straightforward to continue your current regimen or explore whether a different option — like injectable PrEP — might be a better fit.

What to Expect at Your First PrEP Visit

Getting started on PrEP is straightforward. Here's what the process looks like.

1

Schedule Your Appointment

Call our Tampa office at (813) 906-8115 or submit the request form. Our staff will schedule a new patient PrEP consultation and let you know what to bring, including any records from a previous provider if applicable.

2

Baseline Evaluation & Lab Work

Before starting PrEP, you'll receive a full baseline HIV test, kidney function panel, hepatitis B and C screening, and STI testing. This establishes your starting point and confirms you're a good candidate for PrEP. Results are typically available within a few days.

3

Choose Your PrEP Option & Start

Once labs are reviewed, your provider will discuss oral and injectable options and issue your prescription or schedule your first injection. We'll also go over how PrEP works, what to do if you miss a dose, and when to come back for follow-up.

4

Ongoing Monitoring Every 3 Months

PrEP requires a follow-up visit every three months to repeat HIV testing, check kidney function, screen for STIs, and renew your prescription. These appointments are quick and our team makes them easy to fit into a busy schedule. Injectable PrEP patients receive their next injection at each visit.
