Dr. Raj B. Uttamchandani graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. He then finished a 6 month stint as a rural health physician in the town of Buenavista, Guimaras Island, followed by a year of rotating medical internship and another year of residency in Internal Medicine at the Makati Medical Center, Makati, Philippines. His North American experience started soon after as a pediatric resident at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, followed by an internal medicine residency at the St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, then finishing at the Cabrini Medical Center (New York Medical College) in New York City. This latter rotation is where he became infatuated with the specialty of Infectious Diseases which lead to a two year fellowship in Infectious Diseases followed by a year of clinical research fellowship in Special Immunology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. This experience sealed his fate leading to his immersion into and the dedication to HIV medicine.
Dr. Uttamchandani joined the Faculty of Internal Medicine, division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami/Jackson Medical Center where he was a participant/co-investigator to hallmark, early HIV treatment trials and co-authored or authored several key publications in the field. He was medical director of a novel, dedicated HIV treatment unit. Since leaving the University, he has continued to care for patients with HIV in the inpatient and outpatient setting and remains committed to continue the same.
Dr. Uttamchandani currently has Active staff privileges at Jackson South Community Hospital and Baptist Hospital of Miami.
Lorraine Dowdy received her DO from Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine. She did a General Rotating Internship at Humana Hospital South Broward in Hollywood, followed by Residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Jackson Memorial Hospital /University of Miami School of Medicine. She is currently Board Certified in Infectious Disease.
Dr. Dowdy previously served as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Infectious Diseases Liaison to the Department of Surgery, Division of Transplantation and Infection Control Physician, Tuberculosis and Bloodborne Pathogens Programs, Office of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Miami. She established the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital and served as chair of the Infection Control subcommittee.
Dr. Dowdy has been published on a number of occasions and has served as Principal Investigator on several research endeavors over the years.
Dr. Dowdy has been in private practice providing inpatient consultations and ambulatory Infectious Disease management. She holds Active staff privileges at Jackson South Community Hospital and Baptist Hospital.
Patients’ Responsibilities
All patients are expected to be an active participant in their health care by:
1. Assuming responsibility for certain aspects of their care.
2. Providing the health care team with a complete medical history including access to prior medical record.
3. Preparing for their appointment by bringing a list of their medications and any questions or issues that they have with regard to their diagnosis and treatment.
4. Following the Care Plan that the health care team has developed for them and communicating to the health care team any deviation from that plan.
5. Contacting the clinic for advice before going to the Emergency Room for non-urgent conditions.
6. Working with the care team to learn how to self-manage their care.
