Dr. Moti Ramgopal recently presented at the Pri-Med Tampa Regional Conference, held August 4–5, 2026, where he shared the latest advancements in HIV prevention with healthcare professionals from across the region.
His presentation, "Advances in HIV Prevention in the US," reviewed the epidemiology and impact of HIV in the United States and affected communities while highlighting the expanding role of long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The session also summarized key clinical efficacy and safety data, discussed how to identify individuals who may benefit from HIV PrEP, and explored practical considerations for incorporating HIV prevention into everyday clinical practice.
One of the most significant developments in HIV prevention is the availability of long-acting injectable PrEP. These medications provide an alternative to taking a daily oral pill, helping many individuals stay protected with scheduled clinic visits. Currently, two FDA-approved long-acting injectable PrEP options are available:
Apretude® (cabotegravir) is administered as an injection every two months.
YEZTUGO® (lenacapavir) is the first twice-yearly injectable PrEP option, administered as two subcutaneous injections every six months to reduce the risk of sexually acquiring HIV-1.
Long-acting injectable PrEP offers several important benefits, including eliminating the need for a daily pill, reducing pill fatigue, and providing a discreet HIV prevention option. However, it is important to keep injection appointments on schedule, as missing doses may leave gaps in protection. Like oral PrEP, injectable PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy, making routine screening and preventive care an essential part of maintaining overall sexual health.
